Contemporary Home & Great Room

In the renovation of this 1891 rowhouse, the clients wanted a renovation that would reflect their contemporary taste but gave a nod to the historic aspect of the home. The homeowners were especially delighted with our success in achieving a “light and airy” feel.

On the main floor, we designed and built a new kitchen. The client wanted to open up the entire floor to increase the amount of natural light that flowed into the main floor of this rowhouse. He also wanted a visual connection from the front entry to the back door. To make the kitchen central to the floor plan, we flipped the original kitchen and dining room and removed the walls. Additionally, we used the same herringbone flooring throughout the entire first level. The white oak floor, stained white, is distinctive yet evokes the historic character and quality of the buildings in the neighborhood. We kept the historic trim in the front area but simplified the trim in the kitchen and dining rooms.

Additionally, on the third floor, we created a primary suite with a new bed, bath, and closet. We keep the “light and airy” contemporary feel from the main level consistent in the design.
